WHAT WE DO

Advocacy

As a community based program, the FSC is in constant need of up to date information on services and programs available in the community to connect families in time of hardship. In addition to information and referrals, the center has to embrace the empowerment approach to help families advocate on their own behalf. Due to the fact that the FSC primarily serves immigrants with low proficiency in English and a lack of bureaucratic practices in their country of origin, advocacy remains a central function to ensure that families get the services that they deserve. Therefore, advocacy is seen as a teaching moment that goes through 3 phases:
  • Coaching sessions on self-advocacy
  • Accompanying families to service providers when needed
  • Assisting individuals and families in appealing denial for services that they are entitled to
